I.          March-“Ion Neculce” program  in bloom

March was a month full of satisfactions in the work with the volunteers and, implicitly with the pupils at “Ion Neculce” school.

Everyone worked a lot but the results are pozitive:we had prepared several debates in classes, we helped the children with their lessons at Romanian language and mathematics; dance classes continued and so did the Italian classes.Even more,a picture society was opened, we had the first contest in one of the classes and the first experience in going out with the children took place (this activity was meant to be a reward for the children who took part in a series of activities organized by the Joseph Foundation in collaboration with “Ion Neculce” school).

We can definitely say that during March Joseph Foundation’s volunteers were very active.

We had three debates in the following classes:fifth B, sixth B and seventh A, debates that had as topics:Communication and relationship in group, Prevention of drug abuse and Adolescence. The children proved to be very interested, participated in an active way and showed to the volunteers that they can be a real dialog partner.

As for helping the children with their homework at Romanian language and mathematics, we had three meetings for each of them.Even though some of these activities were done on Saturdays children participated. There were, also, four meetings with the children who want to learn the Italian language and three meetings with the children who go to dance classes.

The month of March brought along new activities in the program we develop in collaboration with “Ion Neculce” school. With our volunteers’ help we had the first contest at class seven A.The children showed us, once again, that, although they come from families with problems, with lot of pain and problems, they are willing to communicate and be affirmed. They are happy to see people appreciate their work and to feel they are important and everything they do is valuable for the adults around them. This is the way their self-esteem is increased and they learn to trust both themselves and the ones around.

Picture society opened-the activity takes place on Saturdays and already has very good results. Two meetings took place and we are happy to show you the work of some of these children.

In order to reward the most active children during March a going out with them was organised-the children went to McDonalds where they ate something and after that visited the Museum of Natural History. This is the way we wanted to show these children that we care and that we appreciate their efforts. We intend, before the finishing of the school year ,to reward all the children from “Ion Neculce” school who participated, in an active way, to the activities developed by the Joseph Foundation. We attach here some photos from the moments before their parting , as we want to give you more details on this activity in the next paragraphs.

We want to thank all the volunteers who involved themselves in an active way in the program developed by the Joseph Foundation during March!!!!

Going out with children from “Ion Neculce” school

As a consequence of their participation to the activities developed by the Joseph Foundation a number of 10 children were selected to go to McDonalds and  visit the Museum of Natural History. The children were very impressed by what they have seen at the museum and had a great time at McDonalds. The photos below are the best way to show you their emotions.

The children came directly from school and, as they were hungry, we thought of taking them to McDonalds to eat something. This photo shows the children waiting for their food.

They received the food and, also, a little toy of which they were very pleased-they almost forgot to eat-this is how curious they were to see what the litte toy could do.

After they ate we went to the Museum of Natural History where they remained amazed of the animals in front of them. They were curious to find out more information on animals, especially on the big ones.

We ended the visit with some group photos in the garden of the museum mentioned above. The children are looking forward for other occasions to spend time together and they were very grateful for the opportunity they had.

Counseling program

Two girls started coming to counseling –both pupils in the seventh grade, adolescents with communication and relationship problems with their parents and with their teachers;they have a bad entourage, poor school results, lack of interest for learning;they don’t have good role models and they are interested in different things than school. But the most important step has been taken:they started coming to counseling and talking about their problems-like this they became aware of the fact they have some issues to solve-we meet on a weekly base and we hope that after this they will have the power to overpass this situation they are in.

II. “Sponsor a child” program

This month we answered to a request coming from The Communitary Direction of Social Work. We financially helped a little boy by the name of Condurache Cristian Francisc, the eldest child of Condurache family. The boy is diagnosed with muscular distrofy. Our help consisted in a certain amount of money meant to help the family buy a medical device that can help the boy walk. The family is composed of four persons who live in one small room-they live in difficult conditions and earn small amounts of money. The case remains in our attention and, maybe, in the future, we will be able to offer them both specialised and material help.

III. Prayer reasons

Ioana is only 16 years old and is diagnosed with Alveolar Sarcomatosis with lung metastasis. She goes to school in the 10th grade, but, due to her medical problems she had to freeze her school year, as during December 2007 the lung metastasis appeared.

Initially, in September 2005 in the Hospital « Sf. Maria » in Iasi she was diagnosed with Alveolar Sarcomatosis – she followed treatment with chimotherapy. In March 2006 she suffered a surgical intervention in order to extirpate the neoplasm cells.Another treatment period followed and in December 2007 she was diagnosed with lung metastasis and the doctors in Iasi recommended treatment and surgical intervention at a proffesional clinic abroad, as in Romania such interventions cannot be realised.

Ioana needs an urgent intervention with stem cells and, after the intervention she will follow again chimotherapy and radiotherapy for at least three months-the costs involved are very high and the parents cannot sustain them.

Let us pray that God will touch the hearts of those who can financially get involved so that Ioana’s treatment and surgical intervention will be done.

Let us pray for Ioana.

IV. Children in fostering.Always by their side.

We were happy to be able to help the children in fostering during March, too-we are talking about children we have protected and loved for many years , children who we used to visit on a monthly base. Now, they are the ones who contact and visit us whenever they have a problem or just want to share their thoughts with us. This is exactly what happened during March, too, especially as we had two important celebrations-the first and the eighth of March. We thank them again and we assure them of our love and support.

V.                 Transfrontalier Phare Project– Republic of Moldavia

As we have already told you last month Joseph Foundation has started implementing a  Phare CBC Transfrontalier  project in partnership with Caritas Moldova.

The project “Transfrontalier partnership for supporting children in need” is designed to achieve a stronger collaboration between governmental and non-governmental organizations from Iasi and Chisinau, organizations that are working in the field of child protection. In order to achive this objective, know-how visits will be done, a comparative study (Iasi-Chisinau) will be realised on the topic of abandoned children and the social protection system and a training for 20 specialists in the field, from Iasi and Chisinau, will be held.

During March all the necessary steps were taken in order to organise the visit of the specialists from Moldavia Republic. The visit will take place in Iasi in April.

VI. Phare MIS Project – Support for poor gypsy families in Raducaneni

The project is focused,as we have already told you, on qualifying 30 gypsy people in Raducaneni in two jobs:carpenter and constructor. Like this, the beneficiaries of this project will be able to support themselves and become a real support for their own families.

During March informative materials were printed and distributed in the community.Visits were done to Raducaneni and the selection of the beneficiaries who will participate in trainings ended. We have 35 beneficiaries, for now.On the 27th of March the trainings officially started.
